Sol-Space has been founded by Ashley West and Stephen Buckeridge to create a space for serious abstract painting. Given the diversity within painting today, the aim is to provide a particular focus and identity. What we try to engage in ourselves, and are looking for in other artists is a personal and highly reflective exploration of both the medium of painting and the language of abstraction - and a search for integrity. We are also interested in this process being evident in the work itself – in the layering, revision and so on, although one cannot be too definitive about this. The articles and discussions on this site will indicate the kind of artists whose work we particularly respect and have been inspired by, but those such as Cezanne, Bonnard, De Kooning, Motherwell, Giacometti, Sutherland, Diebenkorn, Marden, Richter and Nozkowski would be examples.
The number of artists featured within the gallery is limited to around twenty in order to retain the sense of a close community, although others are invited to become ‘associated artists’ in order that links are established with those with similar interests. Exhibitions are organised periodically in a variety of spaces. The gallery’s aims are not primarily of a commercial nature; essentially, it is envisaged that through association with the gallery, artists will develop an affiliation with others, will have the opportunity of exhibiting alongside them, and will benefit from discussion of ideas that are of mutual interest.
